Across the world, the modernist tradition of the previous century left a legacy of rejecting ornamentation. The attitude of the modernists to life is associated with a continuous process of change and evolution, focused on the future, different from the past and the present. However, it’s a good idea to ask whether ornamentation, as a design element, is a resource that people have always used to transmit messages or emotions, in short, to communicate? Was it perhaps an addition, whose sole function was to embellish the work? The objective of this dissertation is to study the relationship between architecture and ornamentation through history, in order to understand its role and identify the concept of ornamentation today.
