Both colonial Algeria and independent Algeria have been the custodians of architectural traditions that were not theirs: Muslim scriptures for architects in the colonial phase, and colonial architecture for contemporary Algerian architects. The purpose of this dissertation is therefore to try and bring a fresh perspective to the common or distinct challenges of producing architecture in Algeria during these two periods and to understand how this architecture developed, in a continuous or discontinuous movement.
