The masks of West Africa, mediators between humans and the afterlife, are sacred objects used in religious ceremonies. Each mask has a very specific function and an aesthetic particular to it. Due to many factors, many of these objects are now to be found in the Western world, stripped of their primary function and identity. From curiosity to adoration, the masks have passed through many people’s hands, who have all played an important role in this change of status.
